What Is This Craziness?
Birdathon!TM is a peculiar event - the bird watching equivalent of a walkathon. Somehow people who love birding are able to convince birders and non-birders alike to pledge money for every type of bird seen on a particular day. Even more peculiar is that this happens across the entire nation every May. National Audubon sponsors this birding competition every year, and Columbus Audubon is just one of many participating local chapters across the United States.
Why the Birdathon?
The purpose of the Birdathon is to raise money for Audubon. This year, all of the money raised goes to help fulfill Columbus Audubon's commitment to raise money for the Grange Insurance Audubon Center. The GIAC opened last summer and already is a major presence for conservation and environmental education in Central Ohio. One of the few such urban centers in the country, it brings nature to an entire community that would otherwise have very little natural heritage. But of course it's not limited to those in the middle of Columbus: this nationally significant center is providing education and enjoyment to individuals and groups from all over Ohio every day!
How Can You Help?
Easy! One way is to be a birder and join a Birdathon team -- or form a new one. The other is to make a pledge and sponsor a team. Either way, you are helping CA to support the GIAC.
