Field Trip: Winter Birds of the Dublin Scioto Gorge
February 16 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
When: Sunday, February 16, 9:00 AM-2:00 PM
Where: Kiwanis Riverway Park – map
Description: Join us as we venture to some of the woods and shorelines along this hidden habitat of Columbus, looking for overwintering ducks, herons, raptors, and perching birds. We’ll start at Kiwanis Riverway Park to try for the large numbers of roosting waterbirds there, and visit several areas in and around the edges of the Gorge. The steep sided valley, flowing river, and the many limestone seeps along the Gorge make for an unusual habitat that holds birds even in the coldest parts of the winter. We’ll have several moderate walks on trails, a few with some steep sections, so wear durable footwear and dress for unpredictable winter weather. If we have the chance, we’ll also stop at the nearby OSU Airport if wintering raptors are still around. We’ll meet at Kiwanis Riverway Park at 9:00 am.
Trip should be over by 2 pm.
