House Sparrow - Photo C Watts

The Deckbirds (Pat Barron, Cheri Brown, Bev May and Pete Precario) had a really good Birdathon year.

This year we chose a German Village Deck to see if we could find a more southern species for our annual bird. It proved to be an excellent choice. For the first time in many years we saw an actual, verified House (English) Sparrow (Passer domesticus). We checked it out with our Peterson’s as well as Kaufman and Sibley guides, so we are fairly confident of the species.

Once the excitement wore off, we settled into some craft beer and snacks. Wine just didn’t fit with such an exciting bird. While we don’t like to make exorbitant predictions, based on our excellent results this year we are hoping to see a Grackle next year. We can’t wait!

Not only was the birding great, we also raised $900 for the great Columbus Audubon programs. This was a record year for all!
