Columbus Audubon is proud to sponsor the Central Ohio Owl Research Project led by Dr Blake Mathys.

The project started its first targeted searching on December 28th; at the first location checked, 3 (yes, 3!) Northern Saw-whet Owls were found. After continued searching (8 locations searched so far), the project is up to 4 Northern Saw-whet Owls and 1 Long-eared Owl found (plus 2 Barred Owls). We’ve also collected around 200 owl pellets which will be used for diet analysis. The photo above of the Long-eared Owl was taken by COOP collaborator John Kuenzli.

Don’t forget – if you know of any likely locations for Barn owls, Long-eared owls, and Northern Saw-whet owls, please email Dr. Mathys at [email protected]; all locations will be kept strictly confidential.
