Woody vegetation management with fire

The preserve, accessed by permit only, contains an alkaline fen and features a high-quality prairie fen community. Our volunteers have put a lot of effort into removing woody vegetation, which by means of succession, are invading the fen meadows. Last July we had an opportunity to visit the preserve during the growing season and enjoyed it in full bloom. It felt great to see how our work helped to keep this community alive and healthy. During this trip we will work on woody vegetation removal: we will cut small trees and shrubs, stack them into piles, and burn.

Everybody is welcome. Bring your lunch, water, and work gloves and dress for the weather. Tools will be provided. Transportation will be available for people traveling from Columbus.  For questions or to register, please use the form below. Further information will be sent to the registered volunteers.
