When faced with threats such as climate change, one natural reaction is to give up in despair. It may seem that there’s nothing that you, just one individual or just one family, can do.
But you and your family can do something! Long-time Columbus Audubon leader Dave Horn has put together a quick list of eight things that you can do to help keep our planet safe.
- Take the bus or train. Per person per mile, buses and trains release far less CO2Â than cars. While you’re at it, lobby for passenger rail service in Columbus. You could move to Cleveland, Cincinnati, or Dave’s beloved Boston, but that may be a bit extreme!
- Turn down the lights, heat, and air conditioning. (For air conditioning, we mean turn the thermostat up a few degrees.)
- Don’t buy and use electrical gadgets that you don’t really need.
- Support local food production.
- Eat less meat.
- Support alternative energy production: wind, solar, hydro, and nuclear (yes, nuclear).
- Tell your friends what you are doing and why. Tell your enemies, too!
- If you print this list, use both sides of the paper. Better yet, don’t print if you don’t need to.
And don’t forget, these actions not only can help the Earth, they also can help you: both your health and your wealth can benefit.
